Fire at Amsterdam hotel prompts evacuation of 140 guests

A major fire broke out at an Amsterdam hotel on Johan Cruijff Boulevard late Monday night.

About 140 guests were evacuated as firefighters searched the building to make sure everyone had left.

The fire service declared a major fire because of heavy smoke and many emergency calls.

The fire may have started when a device caught fire, but the cause is not confirmed.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control quickly.

Two guests went to hospital for checks after inhaling too much smoke, while other guests were also examined by ambulance staff.

Guests were later placed in nearby hotels after first being taken to the departure hall at Bijlmer Arena station.
