São Paulo play puts an overlooked theatre prompter centre stage

Sopro premieres at Sesc 14 Bis in São Paulo on October 22, putting a theatre prompter at the centre of its story.

A prompter is the person backstage who quietly supplies lines when actors forget them.

The play’s company postpones its premiere after its director falls seriously ill, then begins creating a show about a woman who works as a prompter.

As she takes centre stage, she retells memories of theatre, both real and invented.

The production is directed by Marco Antonio Rodrigues and features Noemi Marinho, Amanda Acosta and Dagoberto Feliz.

The play draws attention to a backstage job that is disappearing from theatre.

It is scheduled to run through November 15, with performances from Thursday to Sunday and on public holidays.
