Eleven stolen monkeys found at French zoo, two remain missing

Thieves took 13 monkeys from a zoo in Lescar, in southwestern France, during a break-in overnight from Monday to Tuesday.

The animals included tamarins and endangered cotton-top tamarins, which are at risk of extinction in the wild.

Police have recovered 11 monkeys, while two are still missing.

Three people have been arrested; authorities suspect the animals may have been intended for sale on the black market.

The zoo said the recovered monkeys are in good health, though somewhat traumatised, and the animals had previously been seized from wildlife traffickers.

Police are continuing the search for the two missing monkeys, and the zoo hopes they will be found.
