Anthropic leases capacity at proposed $10-billion Nova Scotia data centre
Anthropic has leased space at a planned AI data centre in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia.
The San Francisco company makes the Claude chatbot and says the capacity will help meet demand from Canadian and global customers.
Developer EverWind Fuels estimates the project will cost $10 billion, including $8 billion for the data centre and $2 billion for wind projects.
The centre is planned in two phases, with capacity of 95 megawatts in the first and 325 megawatts in the second.
EverWind says the project could create 2,000 construction jobs and 215 permanent jobs across the centre and wind farms.
Data centres use large amounts of electricity and water, so governments and communities have called for protections against higher power bills and harm to local resources.
The first phase is expected to start operating in late 2027, with the second planned for 2028, subject to commercial, technical and regulatory conditions.
EverWind Fuels plans a data-centre campus in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia, with a total investment of $10 billion.
Anthropic later confirmed it had signed a long-term lease for capacity at the site, after EverWind initially described the tenant only as a leading AI developer.
The plan allocates $8 billion to the data-centre campus and $2 billion to onshore wind projects.
The facility is planned in two phases, with capacities of 95 megawatts and 325 megawatts.
EverWind says the project is expected to support 2,000 construction jobs and 215 permanent positions.
