Reports differ on Flávio Bolsonaro’s remote Senate vote attempt

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro was in the United States as Brazil’s Senate considered a public security proposal on Tuesday.

One account said he took part remotely, while another said he could not join because his new phone was not registered with the Senate.

The session allowed lawmakers to participate from a distance, but the Senate requires devices to be authorized.

The proposal would increase penalties for criminal factions and expand the roles of the Federal Police and Federal Highway Police.

It would also put Brazil’s Unified Public Security System into the Constitution.

Bolsonaro left Brazil on October 28 without notifying the Senate in advance, according to one account.

He is under investigation over suspected money laundering, which he and the other people under investigation deny; the accounts do not confirm whether he ultimately voted.
