Brazil’s congressional leadership races shift as new lawmakers prepare to take office

Brazil’s newly elected lawmakers will take office in February 2027, when Congress will choose the presidents of its two chambers.

The votes are scheduled for February 1, and the new balance of seats has changed the race for leadership.

In the Senate, current president Davi Alcolumbre is seeking re-election, but the PL party will have 29 seats and may nominate Rogério Marinho or Tereza Cristina.

The PL would need 12 additional votes to secure the Senate leadership, and Alcolumbre is seeking support from centrist and left-leaning parties.

The governing alliance is expected to back Alcolumbre in the Senate and current House president Hugo Motta in the Chamber of Deputies.

Motta may face a challenge from Sóstenes Cavalcante of the PL, which won 121 seats in the lower chamber.

The Senate race appears more uncertain, while the outcome of both contests will depend on support among the incoming lawmakers.
