McDonald's opened its first Swiss restaurant in Geneva in 1976

On 4 November 1976, McDonald's opened its first Swiss restaurant on Rue du Mont-Blanc in Geneva.

The restaurant started with 25 employees and a menu of eight items, including hamburgers, fries and milkshakes.

It introduced quick counter service at relatively low prices, a new approach to eating out in Switzerland.

Some people opposed the chain, seeing it as a sign of American influence and a threat to traditional restaurants; calls for boycotts and attacks followed.

The company expanded to Basel in 1979, opened its first McDrive in 1990 and reached Ticino in 1993.

Today, about 190 restaurants operate across Switzerland, employing around 8,400 people and serving about 275,000 customers a day.

The original Geneva restaurant is still open, while the chain continues to add locations; seven opened in Switzerland in 2025.
