Chwalinska rallies to beat Kartal and win Wuhan Open

Maja Chwalinska beat Sonay Kartal in the Wuhan Open final in Wuhan, China, on Sunday.

The Polish player came back to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, after Kartal took the first set.

The victory gave Chwalinska her first career title and her first win at a WTA event above the 250 level.

Both players were competing in their first WTA 1000 final, one of the tour’s top-level events.

Chwalinska will rise to 11th in the world rankings, after reaching the French Open final earlier this year.

Kartal reached the final after returning from a back injury that kept her out for more than six months, and is set to break into the top 40.

Chwalinska earns 1,000 ranking points and $665,000 in prize money.

We’ve had an unbelievable week. I think not many people expected me to be here, and to bring the level that we did.
