Santander faces €36.85bn in debt maturities in 2027

Santander has €36.85bn in bonds due in 2027, more than BBVA, CaixaBank and Sabadell together.

The maturities are part of €63.2bn in bonds due across the four Spanish banks next year.

When bonds mature, banks must repay them or issue new debt to replace them.

Higher interest rates have raised banks’ financing costs, and refinancing could become more expensive by 2027.

Santander says it wants to reduce its debt and plans to let some maturing bonds expire without replacing them.

Its Webster and TSB acquisitions add to the debt coming due, but the bank says it can manage the extra needs without taking on new borrowing.

The debt includes different types of bonds, and Santander’s largest categories are generally easier and cheaper to issue than its more complex debt.
