Pistorius does not signal interest in leading Germany’s SPD

Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) plans to elect a new leadership team by the end of the year.

Party leader Bärbel Bas announced she would step down, saying her stepdaughter had died and that she had faced public attacks.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is seen as a possible candidate to lead the party.

Asked about his ambitions, he said his recent speech at an SPD protest in Berlin came from personal conviction, not from a wish for a leadership post.

The protest followed the election of the first Alternative for Germany (AfD) state parliament president.

Pistorius also criticized public attacks on Bas during her personal loss, saying there should be no disagreement about avoiding them.

The party’s leadership election is expected by year-end, but Pistorius has not declared whether he will run.

What people are saying

It can be hard for some people in the public or even in the party to imagine, but you can do something like last Tuesday on August Bebel Square simply out of an inner conviction, from a deep impulse, without linking it to any ambitions or demands. I think that says it all.
