Netherlands nominates Klaas Knot to lead the European Central Bank

The Netherlands has nominated Klaas Knot to become the next president of the European Central Bank.

Knot previously led the Dutch central bank.

Christine Lagarde plans to hand over the job next February, about nine months before her normal term ends.

Her planned early departure has opened the contest to choose her successor.

Spain’s former central bank chief Pablo Hernández de Cos is also seen as a leading contender.

Eurozone countries have until 7 November to put forward candidates, and their names are due to be considered by eurozone finance ministers on 9 November.

EU leaders will make the formal appointment based on a recommendation from eurozone countries.
