Madrid court orders Vito Quiles detained to notify him of trial

A Madrid judge ordered Vito Quiles detained so he can be formally notified that a trial has been opened against him.

The order is for that notification and related legal steps; it says he should then be released unless another legal reason prevents it.

The case concerns an interview Quiles conducted in March 2024 with a woman with an intellectual disability during a protest outside the People’s Party headquarters in Madrid.

Prosecutors say he denigrated her because of her disability and political views, and that the interview was broadcast by EDA TV and shared online.

The woman’s group, Libres y Combativas, brought the case, and prosecutors seek two years in prison for Quiles.

They also seek 18 months in prison for Javier Negre, who heads EDA TV, over the case.

Quiles has been difficult to locate for personal notification, and the court’s next stated step is to deliver the trial-opening decision and prosecution papers to him.
