Shinsegae's Songdo complex moves into permitting 11 years after agreement

Shinsegae's Songdo development is moving into formal permitting 11 years after the group signed an investment agreement with Incheon.

The company has applied to build four mixed-use towers of up to 49 floors on a 59,730-square-metre site near Incheon University Station in South Korea.

The plan includes a shopping mall, a hotel and officetels, a type of residential building.

On November 10, the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority's design review committee is due to assess whether the buildings fit the city's design.

The review is an early step toward advancing the long-delayed project, and the authority says it will focus on the site's effect on Songdo's image.

A hotel currently operating on the site has announced it will close after December 31.

Shinsegae has said it is seeking advice on the development plan and hopes to complete construction by the time the GTX-B rail line opens.

As this project is being pursued in central Songdo, adjacent to the GTX station, we plan to focus our review on whether the design can enhance the city's image.
