Nikkei says cloud breach exposed about 1.83 million personal data records

Nikkei, a Japanese media company, disclosed a data breach involving a cloud service used for system development.

The unauthorized access began early on October 7 and continued into the morning, after attackers obtained the credentials used to access the service.

About 1.83 million records were exposed, including roughly 150,000 with at least one personal detail such as a name, address, phone number, email address or birth date.

About 120,000 records included email addresses, while roughly 1.68 million contained identifiers that could not identify a person on their own.

No credit card details were included, and Nikkei said no misuse of the exposed data had been confirmed as of October 16.

Nikkei invalidated the credentials used in the breach and notified relevant authorities on October 11.

The company is still investigating the breach’s scope and the information exposed and apologized to people affected.
