US midterms could shift control of Congress from Republicans to Democrats

Americans are voting in midterm elections that could reshape Congress during Donald Trump’s second presidency.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 Senate seats are being contested, along with governorships in 36 states.

Democrats need a net gain of three House seats and four Senate seats to take control of both chambers from Republicans.

If they win the House, they could block parts of Trump’s legislative agenda and investigate his administration; a Senate win could affect confirmations of senior officials and Supreme Court justices.

The election is also a test of public opinion on Trump, amid anger over rising living costs and the war with Iran.

More than 57 million people had already voted early, and close races or legal disputes could keep results uncertain for days.

Polls are closing across the country on Tuesday, and officials will count ballots before the winners are confirmed.
