Toyota develops a new hybrid engine and shared vehicle platform
Toyota is developing a new 1.5-litre hybrid engine alongside a platform for several types of vehicle.
The four-cylinder engine is smaller than the current 1.8-litre hybrid and will have naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions.
The shared platform is designed for hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery-electric cars, so Toyota can build different powertrains on a common base.
Toyota says the new system should improve fuel efficiency by more than 15% compared with current hybrid systems.
The next Corolla could be among the first to use the technology, based on its resemblance to a concept car, but Toyota has not confirmed this.
Toyota has not announced a debut model or sales date, so when the engine and platform will reach production cars remains unclear.
