US strikes Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz

A US official confirmed strikes on Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz, between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula.

A separate account said Qeshm Island was struck, while Iranian state media reported explosions there.

The US official said the targets were people using surface-to-air missiles against US assets.

The strikes appeared limited, rather than a full return to the major military campaign; the US and Iran have been at war since February 28.

The strikes came just before US midterm elections, with the war and higher fuel prices creating political pressure for Republicans.

President Donald Trump had said he would not strike Iran before the elections, and Vice President JD Vance said the two leaders saw prospects for a negotiated settlement.
