Comedian Hiroyuki Sugiyama sent to prosecutors over suspected shoplifting

Police sent comedian Hiroyuki Sugiyama to prosecutors over suspected shoplifting on October 14.

Sugiyama, 49, is a member of the comedy trio Wagaya.

The suspected theft took place at a supermarket in Tokyo’s Meguro Ward on September 15.

He is suspected of taking seven food items, including sausages, without scanning them at a self-checkout.

Store staff noticed the items were not scanned after reviewing security camera footage and confronted him.

Sugiyama reportedly admitted the allegation, saying he was worried about having less income and wanted to keep money for himself.

He had been hospitalized with health problems in late July, then left hospital and returned to comedy performances; the sources give no further details about what happens next.
