Hyundai Engineering signs agreements with two US SMR developers
Hyundai Engineering signed agreements with two US reactor developers to pursue work on demonstration projects for advanced small modular reactors.
The South Korean company will cooperate with Nano Nuclear Energy on a microreactor project at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, intended to supply heat and support carbon neutrality.
Hyundai Engineering plans to help with engineering, procurement and construction for supporting facilities, modular design reviews, supply chains and project development.
Its second partnership is with ARC, which is developing a sodium-cooled fast reactor called ARC-100.
ARC is pursuing a commercial demonstration plant at Idaho National Laboratory, with a planned capacity of about 200 megawatts electric.
The projects involve two different advanced reactor designs: a high-temperature gas reactor-based microreactor and a sodium-cooled fast reactor.
The agreements open a route for Hyundai Engineering to pursue US demonstration work, building on its experience in nuclear engineering.
The company has not given a timeline for either project.
Hyundai Engineering has signed separate agreements with U.S. companies Nano Nuclear Energy and ARC Clean Technology to pursue participation in fourth-generation small modular reactor demonstration projects.
With Nano Nuclear Energy, it plans to cooperate on the first KRONOS micro modular reactor project at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
With ARC, it plans to cooperate on a first-of-a-kind small modular reactor project based on a sodium-cooled fast reactor.
Hyundai Engineering’s planned work includes engineering, procurement and construction cooperation, modular design reviews, supply-chain development and business development.
