At least 20 killed in attack on village in northeastern Nigeria

Gunmen attacked Binnari village in Taraba state, in northeastern Nigeria, on Friday.

Reported death tolls differ: Amnesty International said at least 40 people were killed, while survivor accounts cited at least 20.

Police had initially confirmed 10 deaths, and later recovered more bodies, according to Amnesty.

Residents said the attackers opened fire after Friday prayers and looted shops for food and other goods.

The attackers were described as part of a wider pattern of heavily armed groups that raid villages, kidnap people and steal livestock in northern Nigeria.

The attack adds to recurring violence in the country, but no further action or investigation was reported.
