MLB tests limits on outfield positioning in Arizona Fall League

MLB is testing restrictions on outfield positioning during Arizona Fall League games at Salt River Fields in Arizona.

The rule requires outfielders to play straight up instead of moving to anticipate individual hitters.

A video board tells players whether their position is allowed, using an “X” for an incorrect spot and an “O” for an acceptable one.

The aim is to create more offense, including more doubles and triples, after other changes have had mixed results in lifting scoring.

The experiment has already produced unusual results: one game featured five triples, an Arizona Fall League record.

The test is limited to Salt River Fields, which has technology similar to MLB parks.

Any change to major league rules would still be years away.

The hardest part is cutting off doubles in the gap and they're even turning into triples. That's what they told us they wanted in the beginning. So it works.

The pros are that you're never out of the game, it's very exciting for the fans and there's lots of action, which is part of the intention.
