Former Falcons and Hawaii coach June Jones dies at 73

June Jones, a longtime football coach, has died at 73.

He coached in the NFL, college football and other professional leagues, including the Atlanta Falcons, Hawaii and SMU.

Jones helped popularize the run-and-shoot offense, a passing-focused system that uses several receivers and flexible routes.

He led the Falcons from 1994 to 1996 and later became Hawaii's winningest coach, with a 76-41 record.

Hawaii went 12-0 in 2007 before losing to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, and Jones also led SMU to four straight bowl games.

His teams helped reshape passing offenses and revive programs, including Hawaii and SMU, which had struggled before his arrival.

Jones stepped away from coaching in 2023 after working across the NFL, CFL, USFL, XFL and college football.
