Rubio says US and India are close to finalising a trade deal

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the United States and India are close to a trade deal, but it has not yet been finalised.

Rubio made the comments in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, before travelling to India.

He is due to meet Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai, then visit Jamnagar.

The talks come as US President Donald Trump weighs measures targeting countries that buy Russian oil and gas.

Trump has paused the proposed tariffs while the effects are assessed over 60 days.

Rubio said energy supplies, prices and the difficulty of quickly finding other sources all matter in these decisions.

India remains a major buyer of Russian energy and an important US partner, making the balance between trade, energy and foreign policy significant.
