Dutch art historian and former Stedelijk director Rudi Fuchs dies at 84
Rudi Fuchs, a leading Dutch art historian and museum director, has died at 84 in Amsterdam, where he lived.
He was born in Eindhoven and studied art history in Leiden.
Fuchs led the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam from 1993, after directing museums in Eindhoven and The Hague.
He gained international recognition as chief curator of Documenta, a major contemporary art exhibition in Kassel, Germany, in 1982.
His exhibitions challenged conventional ways of presenting art, sometimes placing works from very different collections together.
He also argued that explanatory labels could narrow how visitors think about artworks.
