Police file case against BJP councillor over remarks about Rahul Gandhi

Punalur police in Kerala have filed a case against BJP councillor R. Sreelekha over remarks about Rahul Gandhi.

Sreelekha, a BJP state vice-president and Thiruvananthapuram city councillor, spoke at a BJP gathering in Punalur.

She compared Gandhi’s behaviour in Delhi to the effects of taking drugs, and also accused him and ministers of littering the city with plastic bottles.

Gandhi is the opposition leader in India’s Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament.

The complaint says the speech could provoke unrest, and police registered the case under Section 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Reports differ on who filed the complaint: one names Congress leader C. Vijayakumar, while another names Youth Congress leader Vishnu Sunil Panthalam.

The section carries possible jail terms of up to one year if a riot occurs, or up to six months if it does not; the reports say the offence is bailable.

The reports do not say what happens next in the case.
