Seville mayor asks government to clear housing protest camp

Seville Mayor José Luis Sanz has asked the central government to clear a housing protest camp at the Setas de la Encarnación, a public square in the city.

The camp has been there since late September, as part of protests against the housing crisis.

Sanz renewed his request after police cleared a similar camp at Madrid’s Puerta del Sol on Tuesday.

He has offered Seville’s local police, including its rapid-response group, to assist with a possible removal.

Sanz says the camp causes cleanliness and disruption problems and that the space is needed for Christmas events and lighting work.

He also says the protest’s housing demands are false, but that is his claim; the camp was organized by the Tenants’ Union.

Campers have decided to stay until November 11, the day of a general strike, and vote each day on whether to continue.

The government has not confirmed a removal date, and Seville is waiting for its response.
