Sheinbaum links higher wages to growth as Mercado Libre opens Hidalgo hub

President Claudia Sheinbaum attended the opening of a Mercado Libre distribution centre in Hidalgo, Mexico.

She said higher minimum wages and better working conditions have increased people’s buying power and helped businesses grow.

Her government argues that economic growth should also improve workers’ lives and share wealth more widely, rather than be judged only by investment.

Mercado Libre Mexico head David Geisen said the company has invested more than $600 million in Hidalgo since arriving in 2024 and created about 4,700 direct jobs.

The new centre uses autonomous robots to move goods, and it is expected to have more than 1,000 robots at full capacity.

Sheinbaum also described plans for a local wellbeing hub with housing, a family medical clinic and schools near workplaces.

Her administration says it wants investment and the minimum wage to keep rising so growth leads to better living conditions.
