New York Archdiocese agrees to $800 million abuse settlement

The Archdiocese of New York agreed to an $800 million settlement over sexual abuse claims.

About 1,300 people say clergy members and other church workers abused them.

The archdiocese covers Manhattan, Staten Island, the Bronx and several counties north of New York City.

The settlement follows years of legal negotiations and wider cases over clergy abuse in the Catholic Church in the United States.

Each survivor is expected to receive at least $250,000, with possible higher payments based on the severity of the abuse.

The deal also includes the release of church documents about sexual offenders and lets survivors pursue additional payouts from insurers.

The agreement still needs signed paperwork, which the archdiocese said was expected in early November.
