South Korea launches defense drone headquarters as operations shift to services

South Korea’s Defense Ministry has launched a new headquarters to develop military drone capabilities in Pocheon, north of Seoul.

It will set common directions for drones and counter-drone systems across the armed forces, test technology and help units obtain equipment faster.

The plan includes a certification system so the military can buy approved commercial drones, drawing on a US model, and efforts to reduce reliance on Chinese components.

The new headquarters replaces the Drone Operations Command, which was created in 2023 and has now been disbanded.

Strike operations are moving to the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps, while the Joint Chiefs of Staff will coordinate drone operations across the services.

The Defense Ministry says this shift is meant to make drone use more common across all units, rather than weaken military drone capabilities.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration will continue to handle purchases, contracts and quality certification for approved military needs.
