Iraqi Turkmen Front leader appointed state minister

Iraq’s parliament appointed Mohammed Seman Agha as a state minister, the first person from the Iraqi Turkmen Front to hold the role.

Agha leads the party and became Kirkuk’s governor in April, after a 100-year gap in the position for a Turkmen leader.

He is expected to submit his resignation as governor to Kirkuk’s provincial council on October 19.

The Iraqi Turkmen Front will then put forward three candidates, and one will be chosen as the next governor.

Under an agreement among Turkmen, Kurdish and Arab political groups in Kirkuk, the governor’s post is to remain with the Turkmen until the end of this year.

Agha said he would carry out his new duties responsibly.
