Count Rudi, key figure in Marbella's luxury tourism, dies at 94

Rudolf von Schönburg-Glauchau, known as Count Rudi, has died aged 94 in Marbella, Spain.

He was a German aristocrat whose career became closely tied to the Marbella Club, the hotel that helped put the Costa del Sol on the luxury tourism map.

Rudi arrived in Spain in 1956 and joined the hotel, which had been established by his relative, Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe.

He became its general manager in 1961 and held the role until 1983, later returning as an adviser.

The hotel drew royalty, artists and international business figures as Marbella grew into a high-profile destination.

Rudi also made his home in Marbella with his wife, Princess María Luisa of Prussia, a cousin of Queen Sofía.

Marbella's mayor has paid tribute to him, saying he left a lasting mark on the city and Puerto Banús; his legacy remains part of Marbella's history.
