Carlos Slim Domit helped fund Sergio Pérez’s early racing career

Carlos Slim Domit backed Sergio Pérez’s racing career after meeting him when Pérez was a child in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Pérez’s father introduced him to racing, and his talent drew the Slim family’s interest.

Escudería Telmex was founded in 2002 by Slim Domit and Jimmy Morales to support Mexican and Latin American drivers seeking opportunities abroad.

At 14, Pérez wanted to race in Europe, but his family could not afford the cost.

Slim Domit agreed to fund Pérez’s move to Germany to compete in the Formula BMW series after the teenager found an affordable team.

The backing helped Pérez continue toward Formula 1, and he has described Slim Domit as a “second father.”

There was already a very big commitment from Carlos, who had trusted me to send me, so I already had a lot of responsibility at that time; it was no longer a game, I could no longer go back.
