Italy investigates Israel's Katz and other officials over flotilla activists
Italian prosecutors opened an investigation into Israel's treatment of flotilla activists detained after two Gaza-bound missions in 2025 and 2026.
The suspects include Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, military chief Eyal Zamir and senior officials.
The case began after 50 Italian citizens filed complaints about their detention by Israeli authorities.
Activists reported beatings, threats and injuries, and those detained during the second mission also described tasers and rubber bullets; they reported at least 15 cases of sexual assault, including rape.
Prosecutors are examining possible crimes including torture, kidnapping, injury, robbery and property damage, but being investigated does not mean the suspects are guilty.
Israel has denied the allegations, and its prison service said detainees were held lawfully and received professional medical care.
Italy has asked Israel for information; prosecutors could seek a trial if charges are warranted.
