UN-Habitat honours Mexico City’s UTOPÍAS community-space model

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada received UN-Habitat’s Scroll of Honour on October 25 for the city’s UTOPÍAS model.

The award was presented at the opening of La Soberana, a large community complex in the Gustavo A. Madero borough.

UTOPÍAS bring community services, cultural activities, sports and care programs together in one place.

La Soberana cost 300 million pesos and includes medical services, an indoor pool, sports facilities, cultural spaces and services for children and older people.

Brugada said the services would be free, though the information provided no independent measure of the savings for families.

The recognition highlights the model’s links to sustainable urban development, and Mexico City is due to host the World Urban Forum in 2028.
