Indonesia’s BRIN to expand research on predicting forest and land fires
Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency, known as BRIN, will strengthen research to predict forest and land fires months ahead.
Its head, Arif Satria, said the work follows an instruction from President Prabowo Subianto to study fire response in the short, medium and long term.
BRIN is working with universities on prediction models and researching how fires spread at locations where fires are currently burning.
For immediate response, the agency is working with other groups on weather modification operations, and rain has fallen in some areas.
BRIN has also completed research on cassava-based powder to put out fires and says it is ready for field testing.
The powder can clump without ammonium polyphosphate, a material that Indonesia does not have available and must import, so the research aims to improve its effectiveness.
Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency plans to strengthen research to predict forest and land fires.
BRIN chief Arif Satria said the research aims to help predict fires three to six months ahead.
The work includes studying how fires spread and is taking place at current fire sites.
President Prabowo Subianto instructed BRIN to conduct short-, medium- and long-term research on fire management.
BRIN has completed research on cassava-based flour to extinguish fires and says it is ready for field trials.

- To anticipate and improve the management of forest and land fires.
This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
BRIN completed research on cassava-based flour for extinguishing fires and prepared it for field trials.
Arif Satria said BRIN would strengthen fire-prediction research after a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta.

What people are saying
So we have the ability to know what will happen three months, six months from now regarding these fires. I think this ability to predict is very important.
With various universities, we will try to work on how to predict forest fires themselves.
And a number of areas have also received rain, and this is a blessing for which we should be grateful.
