Vilaine water plan approved after four years of debate

A local water commission approved the revised Vilaine basin water plan on Friday, after four years of debate.

The plan covers a large area in Brittany and Pays de la Loire, crossing six departments and serving 1.3 million people.

It aims to improve water quality in a territory where more than 90% of water bodies are degraded.

The plan limits maize herbicides on some erosion-prone land near drinking-water sources, while allowing exceptions and offering financial help for mechanical weeding.

It also sets out measures for protecting wetlands and managing water supplies.

The vote was 45 in favour and 18 against, following disagreement between agricultural groups over pesticide restrictions.

The FNSEA is considering legal challenges, and the plan is designed to be updated to comply with forthcoming rules under France's agricultural emergency law.

We are not against the adoption of the SAGE in principle; we just wanted more conditions to be in place to take farmers' circumstances into account, so they can make a living.
