Mexico lawmakers propose a 5 billion peso cut to the electoral body's 2027 budget
Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has questioned the electoral body's original 47 billion peso request for 2027.
The National Electoral Institute, known as the INE, needs funding to run elections and support political parties.
Sheinbaum said there may be savings in election-related purchases and contracts, while stressing that the Chamber of Deputies decides the final budget.
The government's budget proposal already set aside about 42.3 billion pesos for the INE, below its original request.
A congressional committee has proposed another 5 billion peso cut, which would leave about 37.3 billion pesos if approved.
The committee proposes moving the money to education, environmental work, aviation oversight and the search for missing people.
The cut still needs to complete the legislative process before the INE's final 2027 allocation is known.
Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies budget committee proposed cutting 5 billion pesos from the National Electoral Institute’s 2027 budget.
The proposed reduction would bring the institute’s allocation to about 37.275 billion pesos, but it still requires legislative approval.
The committee’s proposal would redirect the money to education, environmental programs, aviation and the search for missing people.
The INE originally requested about 47.011 billion pesos for its operations, elections and public funding for political parties.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said lawmakers, not the executive, are responsible for deciding the institute’s final budget.
