Bear found asleep on sofa after entering home in Tomsk region

A bear entered a home in Negotka, a village in Russia’s Tomsk region, late last week while the homeowner was away.

It climbed in through a window, damaged the refrigerator and furniture, and ate food it found inside.

The next morning, the homeowner’s relatives came to heat the stove and feed the cats, and found the bear asleep on the sofa.

They called other villagers, who shot the bear.

A local official said the animal was adult and badly malnourished.

Bears have been appearing more often near settlements in the region, where authorities declared heightened readiness in September.

Officials have also recorded seven bear attacks on people in the region this year, with five deaths reported, though some details remain preliminary.

He turned everything over, took out the window and broke everything. He gnawed the refrigerator: apparently he found something edible. He scratched everything around. He took the paintings down. And while he was running around and pulling at everything, even the television turned on. Then, apparently, he had a snack and lay down to sleep on the sofa.
