Painting in southern Brazil to be assessed for Tarsila do Amaral authorship
A painting held by the José Pinto Bicca de Medeiros Art Museum in Alegrete will be examined to see whether it was made by Brazilian modernist artist Tarsila do Amaral.
The Rio Grande do Sul Public Prosecutor’s Office arranged for expert Douglas Quintale to assess it at no cost.
Quintale is authorized to issue certifications relating to Tarsila’s work, based on authority from representatives of her rights and legacy.
The painting is included in a civil case filed to protect it in June 2026.
The museum has been closed since 2016, and the city of Alegrete remains responsible for the building and collection.
