Tohoku University team gets suspended ban after unsafe flight
At the 2026 Birdman Contest in Shiga, Japan, Tohoku University’s Windnauts team flew a human-powered aircraft in the propeller plane division.
The annual contest challenges teams to fly aircraft they have built themselves, and Windnauts had won multiple past events.
After takeoff, the plane turned left and entered a no-fly zone.
The committee said the pilot reacted too slowly to avoid danger, and the aircraft landed in water close to shore; the team was disqualified from this year’s event.
The committee has now imposed a suspended ban from the next contest, in addition to the disqualification.
The ban will take effect if the team repeats similar dangerous conduct, and the committee will decide when the suspension period ends.
Windnauts apologized and said it is reviewing what caused the incident and how the team builds and operates its aircraft.

The team had already been disqualified after turning left into a prohibited flight zone.
