Rio court ends Americanas’ bankruptcy restructuring

A court in Rio de Janeiro ended retailer Americanas’ court-supervised restructuring on Monday after finding it had met the plan’s obligations due within two years of its approval.

The company entered the process in January 2023 after revealing accounting fraud, with reported debts of about 43 billion reais.

The restructuring plan was approved in February 2024, but some creditors still dispute how they were paid.

In particular, foreign-currency bondholders say their debts were converted into reais without permission; the judge rejected their argument, while other payment disputes can continue in court.

Ending the process could open access to more credit and investment, which the company says had been limited during restructuring.

Americanas plans to continue selling assets and focusing on cash and operating results.

The company says it is preparing for Black Friday and the Christmas shopping season.
