Fire in Seoul’s Guryong Village extinguished after nearly 13 hours

A fire in Guryong Village in Seoul’s Gangnam district was extinguished after nearly 13 hours.

The blaze began on Oct.

27 in a makeshift building, and 77 households and 107 people were affected.

Residents evacuated to safety, and a nearby school and gymnasium were arranged as shelters.

One woman suffered a minor leg injury, according to one account; earlier updates reported no injuries.

Firefighters used 232 personnel, 110 pieces of equipment and six helicopters to battle the blaze and keep it from reaching nearby woodland.

Guryong is a densely packed settlement that grew when families displaced by public works projects built homes on the edge of Gangnam, using materials such as plywood and vinyl.

Its combustible homes make fires especially dangerous, and another major blaze forced hundreds of residents to evacuate in January.
