Tales from Outer Suburbia composers win four Screen Music Awards
At the 2026 Screen Music Awards in Brisbane, West Australian composers Josh Hogan and Ned Beckley won four awards for the ABC animated children’s series Tales from Outer Suburbia.
They won for children’s programming, the opening title theme and soundtrack album, and shared the original song award with Joni Hogan.
The ceremony also recognised composers across film, television, documentaries and video games.
Composers used the ceremony to oppose AI training on creative work without consent or fair compensation as the Australian government considers proposals that could allow technology companies to use copyrighted material to train AI models.
Composer Nigel Westlake said 180 of his works had been included in training datasets without his knowledge.
The debate matters because proposed copyright changes could affect creators’ ability to earn a living from their work.
The sources do not say when the government will decide on the proposals.

We are here to celebrate what AI cannot do
No matter how much digitized data the technology consumes, it is no substitute for human experience, and it is precisely those experiences that inform our creative work, and for every composer or songwriter, it will be different.
