Sheinbaum inspects 25%-complete Querétaro-Irapuato rail project
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum inspected construction of the Querétaro-Irapuato train in central Mexico.
The passenger line is about 25% complete and will run 108 kilometres through six municipalities in Querétaro and Guanajuato states.
It will connect Querétaro with Apaseo el Grande, Celaya, Cortazar, Salamanca and Irapuato, with the first stage reaching Apaseo el Grande.
The route will mix ground-level tracks, elevated sections and road crossings, designed to keep communities connected and allow existing freight trains to keep operating.
The service is intended for trips between cities and everyday travel for work, study and other activities, and is part of a plan to offer alternatives to busy roads.
In Celaya, plans include a railway tunnel more than 1.5 kilometres long and a linear park above part of it.
Alstom is making 47 diesel-electric trains, and the first is expected in June 2027, when operating tests are also due to begin.
