Turkey says 1.8 million electronic products have been refurbished

Turkey has refurbished about 1.8 million electronic products through a government-backed system, Trade Minister Ömer Bolat said at a consumer awards ceremony.

The system lets 29 authorized centers repair and resell used phones, computers, tablets, smartwatches, game consoles, modems and televisions.

The government says this helps keep usable devices in circulation, reduce waste and imports, and give buyers access to products with guarantees.

Other consumer rules require visible menus in restaurants and cafes and ban compulsory service and table charges.

Inspections have resulted in more than 8.8 billion lira in fines since June 2023, Bolat said.

He also said the share of inspected products found unsafe fell from 32% in 2011 to 1%, and that unsafe products are listed in a public information system.

The ministry says it will continue updating consumer rules and conducting checks.
