Two arrested during protest against eviction of family in Vitoria

Two people were arrested during a protest against an eviction in Vitoria-Gasteiz, in Spain's Basque Country.

The Ertzaintza, the Basque police, clashed with protesters who had gathered to stop a family with six children from losing its home.

Hundreds gathered and some blocked the building, while police set up a cordon and entered the building; protesters threw objects, and police made several charges.

The family was still inside the home while officials awaited the court delegation, so it was not clear whether the eviction had gone ahead.

The eviction case has been in court for five years, after the owner sought to use the property; the owner is also described as socially and economically vulnerable.

The family has been recognised as vulnerable, and housing campaigners say it has struggled to find another rental home because of high prices and difficulty renting to a large foreign family.

The city says it may assess emergency shelter if there is no other option, but says its social services do not provide homes.
