Pebble plans plugins to expand what its smartwatches can do

Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky says plugins are coming to Pebble watches as the brand makes a comeback.

Pebble watches have relied on apps, but plugins are designed to provide data and actions to apps and watch faces.

They could supply information such as weather, finance or traffic, or enable actions such as controlling smart-home devices.

The plugins will be written in JavaScript and run in the background on a phone, rather than directly on the watch.

This could let watch faces get information such as calendar events without relying on features built into each face.

A new permissions system will let users control access to location and specified internet addresses, while local operation on the phone is intended to improve security.

For now, plugins are available only through the software development kit, so developers can work with them before they reach users.
