Wauquiez urges French right-wing candidates to agree on one presidential nominee

Laurent Wauquiez wants right-wing candidates to unite ahead of France’s 2027 presidential election.

He called for candidates from the right and centre-right to meet within 15 days and settle on a way to choose one nominee.

He wants one candidate and one shared programme before Christmas, with a clear break from President Emmanuel Macron’s politics.

Wauquiez says the candidates should decide how to choose, though he prefers a primary election.

He says too many candidates risk splitting the vote, and he does not plan to run in a primary himself.

He says the process should be open to candidates such as Gabriel Attal if they support a right-wing or centre-right programme, while Sarah Knafo and her Reconquête party are being excluded by other candidates.

The candidates are expected to agree on a selection method next, but no meeting or decision has yet been announced.
