New York Times appoints Lauren Kelley and John Guida to Opinion roles

The New York Times has named two leaders for its guest essay team in the Opinion department.

Lauren Kelley will oversee guest essays on health, science, climate and artificial intelligence.

She takes over from Alexandra Sifferlin, who moved to the newspaper’s Science desk in May.

John Guida will lead domestic guest essays on politics, public policy and law, succeeding Kelley in that role.

Kelley has held a senior position in the guest essay operation since 2022, while Guida joined Opinion as a copy editor in 2012.

Their appointments shift responsibility between two major coverage areas in a team that publishes commentary from outside contributors.

The new leadership structure is now in place following Sifferlin’s move to the Science desk.
