Kenya land commission faces 7,000-case backlog

Kenya’s National Land Commission has 7,000 land cases waiting over how public land changed hands.

Most involve requests to check whether public land was lawfully transferred into private ownership.

The cases concern public land grants or transfers made before the Constitution was promulgated on August 27, 2010.

Amendments to the National Land Commission Act took effect on November 4, 2025, changing the rules that govern the commission’s work.

The commission says new procedural rules are needed before hearings can begin or continue.

Residents fear the unresolved disputes could fuel tension again as Kenya approaches its 2027 General Election.
